About this painting
An unconscious concept with uncertain meaning, but a strange and unique feeling that I found attractive. The title came to me, as with many of my titles, in an instant when the idea appeared. The symbol of the phoenix appears regularly in my work, and I find that I go through phases of contraction and expansion, death and rebirth. For me then, any proto-phoenix is a positive symbol.

The shapes are a bit like islands in maps. One of the images in my scrapbook is a painting called Rise of the Antichrist by Bruce Pennington, which features a sky of islands in this way.

Ultimately the design was unconscious and the meaning enigmatic, but the strange feeling is palpable. Do we feel sadness or pity for the bird, or is it a sign of a startling rebirth?
