About this painting
A monstrance is a Catholic sculpture designed to hold the host, displaying in as an object of reverence. Mark was inspired by these artworks and wanted to make a secular celebration of life.

Inspired by an instant vision, Mark saw several shapes, pictures of rural natural beauty, surrounding a central image and he decided to paint a series of miniatures all on one panel, segmented.

A bee, a sheep, bread, a mackerel, a sparrow, a daisy, a fox, a cat and in the centre, oak leaves. The surround is cut from white oak, with a white marble base and spikes gilded with 23.5kt red gold.

The paintings evoke a rural peace and beauty.

Technical details
The artwork took a year to create and faced several technical challenges, which Mark enjoys tackling. It was the first time he had used oak or marble, and he designed the work so that it can be mounted on its stand or removed and wall-hung like a painting.
