About this painting
The third painting in 'The Resurrection Sonata', improvised to accompany 'Improvisation On A Theme Of Toad' and 'Adagio In A Key Of Yellow and Blue'. The other two paintings were dark and the second included a dying figure and closed eyes, so I envisaged for the third work, a picture of awakening, freedom, release, a lit up portrait that exploded into air. Thus, a joyous ending as is often the case in music.

In a painting triptych, a painting like this with such different colouration would fit in the middle, where normally the primary painting is flanked by two similar but lesser paintings, such as angels each side of the main (often larger) painting. Here, the inspiration is musical structures, so the climax appears at the end rather than the middle.
