On Commitment

To commit to art is to commit to life on the edge. To walk away from the crowd of humanity on a meandering road, first through green fields with a small band of fellows, and then alone through empty desert, until you reach a precipice before a great black chasm. A place distant from the crowd, but close enough to observe all of humanity one keen glance. Sometimes you paint a bad painting and make one tiny movement towards the edge of the chasm; sometimes you paint a good painting and joyfully shuffle away from the edge; and sometimes you paint a great picture and move one step skyward on angel's wings.
