About this painting
A painting about the Theresienstadt Jewish concentration/death camp, inspired by the image by artist Bedrich Fritta, who was interned (and was to die) there. The Fritta painting, a satire on a Red Cross inspection, is about two things; that some things are hidden or taking place outside of sight, with much concealment on show. A second meaning in that the only escape is death.
The power of the image struck me and I wanted to reinterpret the painting. Death is our only escape from life, and psychologically, much of life is about having parts hidden and parts on show. |
