About this painting
Painted for a competition with the theme of Derbyshire, I chose to depict the stone circle The Nine Ladies. Once threatened with destruction by modern developers, the picture depicts the Celtic Underworld, the stones now mourners.

Nine ladies in a ring weep at the death of a glowing yellow bird, the mythical Phoenix. Is this a final death? The mood is sad as the ladies mourn the passing of ancient Britain, and the respect once shown to the stones.
