Sympathy

Answering the door in her summer dress.
Won't you come inside?
Standing in the hall feeling like a mess.
Now our friend has died.

Rainbows from the glass falling on the floor.
Colours on the stone.
Early morning sun coming through the door
shines on us alone.

I have her sympathy.
I have her sympathy,
when what I wanted was her love.

Sitting in the room staring at the floor,
sipping English tea.
Saying foolish things like I have before.
Being stupid me.

I have her sympathy.
I have her sympathy,
when what I wanted was her love.

Please ask me to stay for I like it here
in your company.
Please I want to stay, but I have to go.
It's too much for me,

with all your sympathy.
I have your sympathy,
when what I wanted was your love.
