Technical details

Like most of Mark's painting, the glazes in this painting incorporate amber dissolved in walnut oil into the painting medium. Used since the 15th century, this resin gives a form of protection and beauty to paintings that many contemporary oil paintings lack. When lit from the side, the surface texture shines uniquely like silver metal, an effect that can be observed on beautifully preserved Elizabethan portraiture at the British National Portrait Gallery.
