About this painting
The Love Reliquary was Mark's first cabinet work. Constructing it took six months and involved many technical processes. The concept was a box of relics, of memories treasured and revered, but also perhaps stored in a sacred archive.
The cabinet is many materials, wood, metal, plaster. The arched doors were made from plaster arches, carefully cast, and covered with walnut veneer. In 2017, A second version of The Love Reliquary was made using the skills learned in the intervening years. This cabinet was taken apart and, for the most part, destroyed when the second cabinet was created. Only the gilded doors of plaster, wood and metal remain. |
