About this painting
I love this painting, but the reason can't be put into words. There is something amusing and strange about it that appears to spiral in enigma. The idea came from a single idea sketch in an instant, complete with title, which is a typical method for me. The tiny idea sketch was literally resized to the final state, to preserve every aspect of it.

The shadows certainly conjure up comparisons with islands and geography. Phoenixes are also something of a trope of mine. A painting 'Nine Ladies Weeping At The Death Of A Phoenix' features one, a dead bird at its heart, and speaking of cores, an aborted idea of the shadow of a Mandrill had a similar concept to this. Some scenes in my 2015 film 'The Love Symphony: A Fantasy of Darkness and Light' feature a hatching chicken and growth from embryo too.

Later in 2018, I wondered if this idea was connected to Brexit, a horrific child-bird emerging, separating from its island. If so, this may be the first in a series of a Brexit related work and considered new names for the work; Hatching or Emergence of the Brexit Phoenix, Broenix. Few would recognise the phoenix word in that latter neologism.
