About this painting
My largest painting of 2009, this work is about chaos and stability.

A distant explosion lights up buildings, at first rigid and mechanical and later organic and shaped like butterflies. Rocks fly from the explosion. Above, in calmness a butterfly floats. It is a swallowtail, the name of a graph that forms part of catastrophe theory. The butterfly's pattern is repeated in the landscape and its shape throughout the picture. In the lower right the patterns form a bifurcation diagram, a graph of chaos. The figure is twisted and cast into the air, but also mirrors the shape of the calm butterfly in the top left.

Overall the picture begins with calmness, then becomes chaotic and unpredictable before settling down to calmness once more with the sunset on the right. An indication of financial crisis, but moreso of the periodic nature of chaos and stability.
