About this painting
This painting was created for The Coffee Art Project, an art event that supports clean drinking water in developing nations via a charity called Project Waterfall. As such, the theme of the work was coffee.
The fundamental impetus for this painting was to evoke the relaxed feeling of being in a coffee shop, something of an expensive luxury. To contrast this, the opposite mood is needed, of unluxury and basic needs, a viewer gazing in, a face at the window outside in storm-laden skies. The black man gives the concept a contemporary social aspect in a year of increasing divisions. The result is a scene of relaxation and desire, the desire for the exotic indicated by the phallic banana. Yet all is somehow sinister, foreboding, decadent. |
