That Dark Day

Let me see you
now that touch is forbidden
Let me write to you
now that we can't speak
Let me kiss your memory
with longing
for that day
for that special day

I am a deer, a frightened deer
and my friends are afraid, too
the golden plams of leaves
have been shed

I remember these houses when they were fields
I remember these fields when they were woods
I remember these woods when they were alive

Let us walk together in silence
now that speech is forbidden
Let us kiss as best we can
and perhaps we will feel
that special glow that died
on that day
on that dark day
